Connotation

i had stolen the meaning
of words today
and placed these lone definitions in a neat
pattern in front of me.

they all gaped at me
and seemed quite lifeless,
i must say.

i suppose,
it was then that i realized
my vain effort to put a word
ahead of its genuine
connotation.

This is a new thought for me. I have never thought of writing as "stealing meaning." It is interesting because, to me, words are just that...letters strung together. It is only when we take those words and create something, we take ownership. That is why this poem is so aptly titled. We all have our different connotations. Well written!

stan laurel - I've had a battle against words since a long time. It's a love-hate relationship I have. This was written to describe the latter.

I'm happy to know that I gave you something new to think about.

transience - :) I honestly believe there's no need for meaning to be even referred to. It's either there or not, you either already know it or don't.

mussolini - Thanks. Not really orthography though!

Swathi - Welcome here, first of all. I'm glad you liked it - deals with some of my basic thoughts about writing.

Billy - I'm embarrassed. Sometimes I don't get what you say!

Wow Im amazed with your poem. At the first point I was on blank page and then the words appeared so gently making a rhtyme. Forming a life of its own

It's your right to define the words and turn the conventions on its head. :)

iamnasra - Welcome here :)

thoughts - Nah. Scrabble counts if you play strip scrabble only.

Bonatellis - Thanks and welcome!

CAROLVS - You have peeped in after a long time!

Sometimes, the genuine connotations are not as important as what we make them out to be. Nice piece.
